science is amazing. just read about this last night: when exposed to high but not lethal concentrations of hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg gas), mice can go into a 'hibernation-like' stage, where the body temperature drops and metabolic processes slow down to minimise oxygen use. a paleontologist, Peter Ward, said that it's a mammalian adaptation to exposures to hydrogen sulphide in the past earth's history. it's not yet demonstrated to be succesful in people or larger mammals, but if it is, that would mean significantly reducing the risk for ischaemic damage to body tissues during trauma or procedures done under general anaesthesia! if only.. anyhoo, article talking about it here: what a year! website *also, i added an Etsy widget on the sidebar on the right showing my favourite items from etsy sellers, but for some reason it doesn't want to show up in Chrome (it works in Firefox).
going through a handmade plush phase (etsy)! will remember to browse those sections next time i'm in kino!
anyway, here are some etsy sellers that i've come across and couldn't stop stalking their sites and saving pics of their creations (i'm not crazy). - My Paper Crane (plushies: etsy, website, flickr, Kidrobot collaboration: on blog & shop) - amiamour (amigurumi/crocheted toys & patterns: etsy - including this REALLY cute Kero (from Cardcaptor Sakura) amigurumi!, website) - Memi the Rainbow (rubber stamps & other things: etsy, blog) - Dandyrions (super cute bear rug coasters and "wrapped fox" shirts! etsy) - SarabiRose (crochet-hats for cats! etsy) - Pysselbolaget (mouse toy/coin purse tutorial on blog)
some useful vet links that i've come across so far. this list is mostly for veterinary students, but for paranoid pet owners who can't stop thinking about a potentially minor problem, the merck vet manual might be a good place to start before then asking for your vet's advice (remember, even a phone call to the vet can be beneficial - better to know all the possibilities in case it is something serious)
WikiVet - online veterinary education! wikipedia created by UK vet schools.
Veterinary Information Network (VIN) - collection of recent news, articles, forums where you can talk to other vets from around the world (and help solve cases /search for specialist knowledge). it's free to join if you are a vet student - to get you addicted and join at a fee after graduating. Veterinary Information Portal (VIP) (University of Sydney) - another site with articles (including animal behaviour & welfare science essays created by 3rd year students, summarising recent research findings)
Anatomy Carnivore Dissection (University of Minnesota) - labelled images of a carnivore dissection
Horse Dissection (Cornell University) - labelled images of a horse dissection
Pathology PathPedia - this is a human website, but has useful histopathology images describing many disorders WebPathology - also a human website
Embryology Normal & Abnormal Mammalian Development (University of Carolina) - actual scanning electron micrographs! very useful when static images from a book are too unclear
Neurology Atlas of Veterinary neuropathology (Cornell University) - haven't used this, but another resource for the complex brain can't hurt
Genetics Introduction (James Cook University) - inheritance, coat colours, population genetics etc etc (can't remember what else was learnt in that subject -_-")
Pocket Pets Diseases of Research Animals (University of Missouri) - mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, gerbils, hamsters. not the nicest connotations, but useful nonetheless.
Guinea Lynx - one of the best sites for guinea pig owners, even has a forum to discuss with other owners.
i've only started reading Sarah Wilson's sunday columns from this year, and started reading her blog recently 'this blog makes life better, sweeter' i agree - her posts are so diverse, informative and non-imposing, and you never know when you'll find them useful.
can't stop listening to songs from the princess and the frog. the storyline is pretty standard, but disney songs are so great, as always! gonna get the piano book next week when i'm back at uni (and out of the house) x)
also, found a new website -society6- where you can buy illustrators' works on t-shirts, hoodies, ipod/laptop skins, canvas:
well, uni's starting again on monday, so postings will probably drop in number (unless of course seriously boring tasks appear and i cannot help myself)
in the meantime, here's a strange picture i found while facebook-stalking (face-stalking?) a person from my class (entire course is in the same class):
look at the cat in the back!! wth it's biscotti's soulmate! (or doppelganger!) hahahhaa and guess wat - i'm NOT lying- IT HAS THREE LEGS TOO!!! (and also the same leg!) i still think biscotti's cuter though hehe, FO SHO! i like fatter cats.
oh oh oh and this blog: kagonekoshiro, has all my favourite cat features in the one cat!! nyuuuuuuu!!! fluffy fur, round face, and extremely thick tail like a snow leopard!!!!!!! ohhhhhhhhhhhh! if only it was a blue-coloured british shorthair, then it will be perfect.
**note - for those that haven't seen biscotti in real life, the black and white pattern of the cat in the picture is nearly the same! look here for reference.
